Newcastle United-Fulham Preview

Fulham have not played like a relegated club over the last month, but it's still a case of too little too late.

With an eye on the future, the Whites look to conclude their Premier League stay on a positive note Sunday against visiting Newcastle United.

Though their 2019-20 Premier League fate was sealed with a 4-1 loss at Watford on April 2, Fulham (7-5-25) won the next three matches, posting a clean sheet in each one. It was a spirited stretch for the Whites, who seemed at their best once the pressure was off.

That run ended with a 1-0 loss at Wolves last weekend, but there is still a chance to end their time in the top-flight in grand fashion Sunday in front of the home supporters at Craven Cottage, whilst also potentially setting a foundation for a strong season in the Championship.

"Last game of the season now, and our main focus is next year," manager Scott Parker told Fulham's official website. "Planning for what's going to be a massive campaign for us, a massive year for trying to bounce back and get into this league. We need to try and prepare as well as we can now."

Fulham will be trying for a third consecutive home victory at the Cottage, where they have not conceded a goal in the last two matches. They played Newcastle (11-9-17) to a scoreless draw on Dec. 22.

The Magpies currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, but will be looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Liverpool last weekend. In perhaps the most entertaining match of the weekend, Newcastle gave the Reds all they had whilst twice rallying back from one-goal deficits.

Salomon Rondon's goal in the 54th minute tied the match, and a point looked there for the taking along with delivering a serious blow to Liverpool's title hopes. However, Divock Origi put the visitors ahead for good in the 86th minute and left Newcastle with nothing to show for the valiant performance.

"I thought it was a great atmosphere and we deserved more," midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng told Newcastle's official website. "After all the hard work we have done this year, we wanted to make sure we finished (the home portion of the fixture list) in a good way. Unfortunately, we didn't get the result, but I thought the effort we put in (last weekend) was fantastic."

Rondon has reached 10 goals for the first time in his four Premier League seasons, but has just one in his last eight top-flight road contests.
